We are thrilled to be joined by Tony des Landes, a local maritime historian and former 50-year port employee. Tony will share his unparalleled knowledge of the port's rich history and document the fascinating rise of cruise tourism in Napier.

After our comprehensive tour of the port facilities, we will gather for a delicious lunch at a local venue. It is a wonderful opportunity to discuss the morning's insights and connect with fellow guests.

Please note:

  • Due to Health and Safety we will not be able to leave the bus. The tour is 45mins to 1 hour followed up a lively learning lunch with Tony where he will share more of his 50 year career at the port with learners.
  • Bring valid photo ID, as it is required for port entry, and note that guests must remain on the bus during the tour.
  • We cater to most dietary requirements with prior notice. Please advise us of any allergies when booking.

Beyond his professional tenure, Tony is a respected local maritime historian who has meticulously documented the port's history, including creating a comprehensive database of shipping movements dating back to 1880. He is also a regular cruise ambassador volunteer, uniquely placed to share the fascinating story of the rise of cruise tourism in Napier over the last 30 years.

Tony's deep passion for Hawke's Bay's maritime heritage, combined with his firsthand experience of the port's transformation into one of New Zealand's busiest hubs, makes him an exceptional and captivating guide for our Learning Adventure.
