Join us for a remarkable Love Heart Learning Adventure as we journey south to a place of profound peace: Our Lady of the Southern Star Abbey in Kopua. Nestled among 900 acres of paddocks and native bush, Kopua is New Zealand's only Trappist monastery, founded in 1954.
Upon arrival, we will be welcomed by Father Nicholas, who emigrated from Holland and has lived at the monastery for 60 years. He will graciously share his deep knowledge of the Cistercian way of life, explaining the profound silence, the dedication to prayer, and the history of the pioneering monks who once farmed this very land. Following a comforting cup of tea or coffee, Kevin—who brings a 30-year background in horticulture to his role looking after the guest house and gardens—will lead us on a fascinating walking tour. We will explore the vibrant vegetable gardens (lovingly tended to by the monks), the peaceful cemetery where past brothers rest, the main church, the ponds complete with ducks and chooks, and the day centre.
After absorbing the tranquil atmosphere of the monastery, our journey continues to the historic Paper Mulberry Café in Pukehou. Housed in a beautifully restored 110-year-old church building, this café is a local treasure. Here, we will enjoy a delicious lunch paired with a lively, facilitated discussion. It is the perfect opportunity to reflect on the morning's experiences, connect with fellow travellers, and enjoy heartfelt hospitality before concluding a day rich in history, spirituality, and delightful culinary heritage.
