Title: Real or Fake? Spotting Misinformation and Disinformation in the Age of AI
Abstract:
Can you still believe everything you see, hear or read online?
AI has made it easier than ever to create convincing fake photographs, videos, voices and news stories. Some are harmless, but most are deliberately designed to mislead, influence or scam us.
This eye-opening session will help you understand the difference between misinformation and disinformation, why false information spreads so quickly, and how AI is making it increasingly difficult to rely on our eyes and ears alone.
Most importantly, you’ll learn some simple ways to pause, investigate and check information before you believe it or pass it on.
Key Takeaways:
- Recognise misinformation, disinformation and AI-generated content: Learn why false information spreads so quickly and how to spot common warning signs in fake photographs, videos, voices and online stories.
- Build confidence checking information before you trust or share it: Learn what to look for in sources, dates and context, how to use reverse image searches and fact-checking resources, and how to talk with friends and family about questionable information.
Please note: You will not be asked to share any personal information during this session. The focus is on practical knowledge, demonstrations and useful tips. You’ll leave with a checklist and access to resources to help keep yourself, friends and family safer online. As AI becomes smarter, getting the basics right is more important than ever.
