From the global stage to a quiet life in Hawke's Bay, Scott Towers has experienced the vibrant contrasts of a life in music. Known to fans as Chopper Reeds, Scott is the saxophonist for the internationally acclaimed New Zealand dub and soul band Fat Freddy's Drop. Since joining the group in 2006, he has toured the world extensively, adding his love of jazz, funk and disco to their signature brass sound. The band recently celebrated the 21st anniversary of the landmark album Based On A True Story, and are part-way through a series of commemorative concerts across New Zealand, Australia, Europe and the United Kingdom.
Join us for an engaging learning lunch where Scott will share the stories behind a life in music; how he started in the first place, his experiences on the road with Fat Freddy's Drop, his passion for record collecting, and what it means to represent Aotearoa New Zealand on the world's stages. Beyond the music, he will also talk about his transition from Auckland to a more grounded, DIY lifestyle in Hawke's Bay, where he hosts bespoke food, wine and audio events.

Parking: On-street parking in Hastings CBD is pay and display during business hours.
There are pay and display parking areas on the corner of Heretaunga and Hastings Streets East, on Queen Street East, and opposite Opera Lane, in the Baker Tilly Staples Rodway carpark.
There are two accessible carparks on Eastbourne Street and one on Heretaunga St East (near the corner of Warren St), which are free of charge.
About the experts

Scott Towers
Scott Towers, known to fans as Chopper Reeds, is the saxophonist for the internationally renowned New Zealand dub and soul band Fat Freddy's Drop. He has lived around New Zealand and abroad before settling with his small family in Hawkes Bay in 2016. A record collector, DJ, builder of soundsystems, event coordinator, food fanatic and keen traveler – Scott created a colourful and constantly evolving life for himself.

Christina Tay - Learning Facilitator
Christina is a lifelong learner with a profound passion for exploring diverse cultures and disciplines. Her curiosity has inspired extensive global travel, from teaching English to Buddhist monks in Laos and volunteering at a Thai orphanage to visiting museums across Europe, the UK, and Asia. A highlight of her travels is the Bishop Museum in Hawai'i, which she visits frequently, including during the 2014 World Indigenous Peoples' Conference on Education.
Her academic journey began with law and politics at Waikato University, where she discovered dispute resolution. She subsequently earned a Master’s in Mediation and Conflict Resolution from Strathclyde University, UK. This period included an exchange at the East China University of Political Science and Law in Shanghai and research in Hong Kong on the ombudsman's role.
Currently a Learning Facilitator for Love Heart Social Learning, Christina also teaches the Restorative Practices microcredential at Victoria University. A fully accredited restorative justice facilitator and assessor, she recently delivered mediation training in Micronesia. Previously, she served as Director of Employee Assistance Resolution Services at Victoria University.
Outside of work, Christina enjoys connecting with loved ones and attending international events, such as the 2025 Restorative Practices conference in Singapore, to continually expand her expertise.
