Why is design in Aotearoa still based on a European colonial extractive model?
What would our rooms, streets and surrounding objects look like if they were designed to add to nature, not detract from it—to tell our stories of te taiao, of people—and in the process, to nurture us? Join internationally recognised Hawke’s Bay designer David Trubridge ONZM for a Learning Lunch on the creative choices that shape the built world .
David’s path is far from conventional. Raised in southern England, he studied naval architecture, taught himself furniture-making while restoring stone ruins in Northumberland and worked as a forester, learning to see timber as a living material. A long family voyage across the Atlantic and Pacific brought David, Linda and their sons to Hawke’s Bay. From Whakatū, he has built a globally recognised practice inspired by nature, light, craft and a responsibility to tread more lightly.
Over a shared lunch, David will trace how boats, wilderness and the forms and materials of his lighting and furniture connect. He will invite us to consider how Aotearoa can develop design and architecture of this place: responsive to climate and ecology, alive to craft, and shaped by local voices and knowledge. It is a conversation about regenerative design and creative courage.
